Address
Ce communiqué de nouvelles est aussi
disponible en français.
The International Actuarial Association (IAA)
is pleased to announce that, at its meeting on 16 October 2022 in
Montreal, Canada, the Council of the IAA approved the following
individuals to serve as Officers of the IAA effective January 1,
2023.
President: Micheline Dionne (Canada)
President-Elect: Charles Cowling (UK)
Immediate Past President: Roseanne Harris (South Africa)
All terms of office are for one year ending
on December 31, 2023
Ms. Dionne's involvement in the work of the
IAA started in 2009 as Council Delegate for the Canadian Institute
of Actuaries. Most recently, she served as Chair of the Climate
Risk Task Force and of the Resource and Environment Forum. In
addition, she has served in various leadership roles on the
Insurance Accounting Committee, the ISAP 4 Task Force, as a
Delegate to the IFRS Advisory Council and a Member of the Executive
Committee. Her complete bio is available online.
Ms. Dionne offered these comments upon
assuming the position of IAA President:
I am pleased to be able to contribute to a
profession as dynamic as the actuarial profession. Over the next
few years, we will face a number of challenges, including taking
into account the uncertainty related to climate change, modelling
new infections and their spread as well as their long-term health
effects, the future of an economy more difficult to predict, and
nature, which reminds us of the fundamental principles of
preservation. None of these changes are linear but understanding
them is tied to interpreting the messages that science sends us. We
need to understand this science to better interpret it through all
the volatility it encompasses and to be able propose concrete
approaches to risk management. Our projection approach is
science-based and takes into consideration the uncertainty
associated with trends and natural fluctuations. This allows us to
model the potential impact of the multiple decisions society will
make. We can help identify the best decisions and suggest concrete
actions to build a better future.
I want to thank all the associations and
their members for their contributions and for inspiring me. With so
many challenges, it's important that we all work together. Compared
with other professions, we are a small group and we cannot afford
to work in silos. I encourage you to share your knowledge and
explore new horizons. I wish everyone a productive year, great
discussions, and progress in understanding the factors that are
changing our lives and our planet.
In closing, I would like to thank my
predecessors, Jan and Roseanne, for their outstanding leadership
and commitment. I intend to build enthusiastically on the progress
made before handing over to my successor, Charles Cowling, in
2024.
